What Should We Wear? Christmas Edition

You've booked a Christmas Photo Session, now what should you wear? Let's get you ready for the most wonderful time of the year!

A Christmas session is such a fun and special memory maker. We love all the Christmas traditions at my house, from decorating the tree to holiday baking to time with loved ones. And yes, I love Christmas cards. Every year, I capture my family for Christmas and enjoy sending cards to loved ones during the season. Here are some of my best tips for getting your family camera ready.

Go Traditional! You guessed it, my first tip is to go traditional with red and green for your shoot. Why do red and green work so well together? When pairing colors, you can find harmony in complementary colors; they just appeal to the eye. In fact, there is so much to be said for color theory when preparing for a photo session. Even if it's not Christmas, consult the color wheel for complementary colors when planning your family's outfits for a shoot.

Plan around Mom's or your girls' outfits first. This is always a tip I suggest for any shoot. Many times ladies' outfits have more designs and patterns. Keep patterns small rather than bold or bright. Pick the outfit for Mom, and use the design from the one outfit to coordinate the rest of the family.

Go Glam if it suits you! Christmas is definitely the time to go big. If you like to go glam, then go for it. Even at a tree farm setting, Christmas allows you to go dressy. Even if the guys in the family want to go a little more casual, feel free to let the girls really doll up. Last Christmas for my own family's session, I went for a more glam look while coordinating my family in outfits I knew they would enjoy wearing. It was a win for me, and a win for them.

Use Layers or Accessories for Christmas. Christmas photos lend themselves to layers which add depth to your outfit. Bring a scarf for yourself or hats for the kids. Use props like a sign or hot cocoa mugs! Plan ahead if you want to switch accessories, especially during a mini session as those move very quickly. (Always let your photographer know ahead of time if you want to add any props to the session. It will help in allotting enough time to squeeze in those special images you want.)

Stay True to your Style! One of my favorite tips is to stay true to you. I, oftentimes, see wardrobe ideas that look great in photos, but ultimately it just might not be my family's look. Wear what represents you, and what you feel great in. Those make for favorite photos.

If I can help you in capturing a memory for your family, I would be honored. If you need a little help in planning your outfits, I'm here for you. I hope you and your family enjoy the holiday season ahead and celebrate what's truly important to you!

Always Grateful,

April Hurst
